Wow. I just saw the Lego #KeepBuilding commercial for the first time and all I can say is…wow.
If a commercial is meant to get me in the heart, it got me. If it was meant for me to see my amazing daughter with an even better insight, it succeeded. If it was meant to get me to buy her lots more Legos (and we know the answer to that already), it did. Although, I think I might not let her in on that last part.
Both my son and daughter LOVE Legos. I don’t even think there is a font large enough to express how much they love Legos. Our house at some point is going to turn into one made with different colored blocks with studs for doorknobs and pretty palm trees and flowers that were a landscaping idea I stole from Emma’s house. Our real house is going to disappear, as will my neighbors’. They will be replaced by Stephanie and Olivia, who will be driving nicer cars than I will ever have. And now I am sure Kylo Ren is going to move down the block and show off his new command shuttle. My poor husband will try to convince him that his car somehow could outrace that thing. (he of course will lose) That is how many Legos we have in our little house and how much Legos are a part of our everyday lives.
As a mom, sometimes the Legos drive me nuts. I can never figure out a way to store them properly. They always end up on the floor. They always end up under my feet. But that’s where the complaints end.
In fact, if truth be told. I love Legos and I love what they bring out in my children. As homeschoolers, my children have some extra time in their days that is always devoted to Legos. That time is a gift. It is a time when they can imagine, be inspired, create, dream, build, explore, explain, and share. My favorite time is when my children come to me to share their newest creations. They explain every detail. That is one of their proudest moments.
Now to the commercial. Lego’s newest campaign focuses on the girls. The new campaign is called Inspire Imagination and Keep Building. The focus in this commercial is girls because they tend to play differently with Legos than boys do. Now for the commercial… watch it. Then I’ll explain why I cried.
Wow. I have a girl like that. She once was a 3 year old filled with so much spirit that she didn’t know what to do with it and it ended up in crazy temper tantrums. Today, she is an amazing, spirited, passionate, and compassionate young girl who is full of life and love. She lights up any room she walks into. She is fiercely independent. Strong and stubborn at the same time. Gentle and kind in all of her ways.
She is that girl in the commercial. No, I don’t mean she is THE girl in that commercial, but that girl in it could just as well be my daughter. In the commercial the girl says, “I don’t always want you to help me. Do you know why? I want to figure it out on my own. Even when it doesn’t turn out the way I want, I know it’s not wrong. Because you taught me how to think. And how to dream. I’m about to make something that I know will make you proud.”
And that’s when I cried. I cried because I can hear my daughter saying that. Every little bit of that. And though she might not voice every word of that to me, I know that is how she feels. Especially when she shows me her Lego creations. As her mom, I want in some ways for her to remain that little child, but in other ways, I am finding that I am falling in love with who she has become and will be. So as hard as it is to watch her grow up, watching her play with her Legos has enabled me to see this beautiful soul become a creative thinker, constant learner, and independent young girl.
Yes, I cried. I cried happy tears, because they got me. They hit me right in the heart, right where they meant to get me and that is perfectly fine. You can bet that tomorrow I am going to say two words to my daughter (and son).
#KeepBuilding.
And am I proud? You better believe it.
Legos rock. Plain and simple. Even when I am trying to dislodge one from the bottom of my foot at 3am.
