That’s right… Ferris Bueller is My Hero.
What? But this is #FaithfulFriday? You might be thinking, “What on earth is she talking about?”.
Maybe you don’t even know who Ferris Bueller is, and if you don’t, you need to.
One of my favorite movies from the 80’s is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. It is just one of those movies where the lines from it stay with you. Today’s Faithful Friday is an example of one of them. While the movie was filled with great lines, some of them really quite funny, some of them were and still are quite true.
Think about when this movie came out. There wasn’t even anything remotely like wifi. We didn’t have the world at our fingertips. We couldn’t just “google” something when we were having a discussion and couldn’t remember the name of a song or movie. Everything was at a much slower pace than today, and that being said, time still moved quickly. If you had children back then, you know what I mean. Time didn’t stand still. Kids grew up in a blink of an eye.
Fast forward to today. And I literally mean fast forward. It seems like everything is just flying by us at the speed of sound. Now our entire lives are being consumed by our reliance on smartphones, wifi, anything that can make our lives and our ability to live our lives faster. We sit next to each other at the table or in our living rooms and instead of looking at each other, we look at our phones. (and I am super guilty of that, so do not think I am saying I am any different) As a blogger, I am keenly aware of the time I spend on my computer, and it’s really starting to weigh on my soul. Not only am I missing time with my children, I am missing time with my husband, and I am missing time just living and enjoying this thing we call life.
Does that sound like you? Does that resonate deep in your soul?
And this is why Ferris Bueller is my hero. (using the word loosely)
He has reminded me that…

All of us need to stop and look around once in awhile, because we can and WILL miss it. We will miss out on so many important things that are going on around us. We will miss out on connections that would have been made or strengthened. We will miss out on our children growing up, or time spent with those who will someday soon leave us. We will simply miss out.
Is missing out on life worth the time spent checking your social media feed? Is it really that important to know what Kim Kardashian is wearing or…not wearing? Is your favorite sports team going to lose simply because you haven’t checked the scores in an hour?
Absolutely not.
I know I have to schedule time for these things that take up so much time now. I know it won’t be easy. I know it won’t happen overnight. And yes, I know telling you to take time to stop and look around awhile may in fact, take you away from reading my blog or interacting with me on Facebook. I get that. But to me, your life and that of your family is more important to me than a number on my Google Analytics.
So do it. Tonight, shut down your phones. Turn off your notifications. Put your phone away and just live in the moment. And when you do take time to visit me back here or on Facebook, I would love to hear what impact this has had on your life.
