Today’s Faithful Friday is one that has alot of meaning to me, in so many different ways.
As I am sure you are aware, unless you don’t pay attention to the news or live off the grid, a music icon, a genius of musical talent whom I have not seen before in my lifetime, died yesterday.
Prince may have been known to many for some of his earlier, more outrageous lyrics, but his talent was undeniable. I was a junior in high school when Purple Rain came out. and the music ended up having a major impact on my high school years and the bond with my close friends. It united us in ways that might never have happened and for that I am forever grateful. In fact, I contacted one of my friends who I have not spoken to in years, simply to share in the feeling of disbelief.
His songs meant so much to us back then, that we started calling ourselves “The Revolution”. My friend made us matching purple sweatshirts (as if there was any other color!) with our nicknames on them. We even tried out for our high school talent show, auditioning with “Let’s Go Crazy”. To us it was our song.
So, fast forward to yesterday when word of Prince’s untimely death hit the news. It was a reminder once again of some of his lyrics and how we can use them as a catalyst to move ourselves forward. To live in the moment, while striving towards the next. To not let the things in life that try to bring us down, succeed. To not let what everyone else decides to settle for, become our way of living. We are meant for more than that. We are meant to excel. We are meant to grow, learn, experience, enjoy! We are meant to live a crazy and abundant life!
In a fitting tribute to an artist who gave so much of himself to his music and to his fans, go out there and live your life. Do things the way you want to do them. More importantly, do things the way God wants you to do them and be exactly who he created you to be. Be your #authenticself, just like Prince always was. When he didn’t want to feel “owned” by the record label, he reinvented himself. No one was going to tell him how to be or who he was. It is the same with you. Take a cue from him. You are unique. You are amazing. And you also have an impact to make in this world. Don’t let anything or anyone tell you that you can’t!
So join me, and like the song says, “And if the elevator tries to bring u down… Go crazy, punch a higher floor!”
Your life is waiting. You never know when you will take your last breath.
He didn’t.
RIP Prince Rogers Nelson, and thank you for sharing your art with all who appreciated it.
