Have you ever wondered what happens after we die? If you have, you are not alone. The question is probably one that is often talked about, but never answered. At least in a way that allows for understanding and peace.
In the documentary, The Case for Heaven, best-selling author and former atheist turned Christian apologist Lee Strobel, attempts to answer this question. Through investigations surrounding near-death experiences, Strobel tries to come up with an explanation that makes sense.
Some of the questions raised in the movie are “Can science and belief in God coexist? Does free will exist?” and “How do these near-death experiences intersect with what the Bible says?”. The Case for Heaven dives deep into those questions and more through interviews with a wide range of people. Professional skateboarder, Steve Caballero, once an atheist, now a believer, Pastor Francis Chan, John Burke, author of Imagine Heaven, are just a few. I, like so many others, have wondered what exactly happens after we die. As a believer, I know where I am going, but what does that look like? What happens at the end? Does the enemy try one last time to convince believers that everything we believed was incorrect? What about non-believers? Do they get a chance to believe? There are also questions raised by former Hawk Nelson lead singer, Jon Steingard, who has renounced his faith and is now an atheist/agnostic. To me, this was the hardest part to watch. Hearing from someone who believed in God and had some sense of understanding, so much so, that he had a huge platform where he shared about God through music, to now being disillusioned with no answers, was difficult for me.
In order for The Case for Heaven to do its job in really investigating this topic, Lee Strobel had to look at all sides. In the end, the movie provides excellent insights into all of those questions, while being respectful of where each person is at. This movie creates a space where questions can be asked, doubts be turned to understanding, and where God can reveal himself to each person. It is an important movie if you have ever had any questions about life after death.
